5 Things to Consider When Planning a Tattoo Journey

Tattoos are more than just ink on skin – they’re permanent reminders of moments, emotions, and chapters in our lives. I'm a proud tattoo owner too and all of my tattoos are a memory of significant moments in my life...
5 Things to Consider When Planning a Tattoo Journey

For me, getting tattooed has never been about trends or impulse decisions. Each piece on my body marks a chapter of my life that changed me. The first one runs along my spine—a symbol of resilience during one of the hardest periods I’ve ever faced. It reminds me, quite literally, to stand tall and proud, no matter what life throws at me.

The second was born out of countless hikes in the Slovenian mountains. After summiting peak after peak, often with sore legs and a full heart, I knew I wanted something to honor the strength, clarity, and quiet power those moments gave me.

And then there's the third—etched after a year-long journey through South America with my partner. That year was wild, raw, and unforgettable. We lived out of backpacks, chased sunrises, got lost (and found) in jungles and cities, and made memories that felt too big to keep only in our minds. That tattoo is my portable postcard, forever inked on my skin.

If you’re a traveler too, you might know the feeling—that urge to turn a moment into something permanent. So if you're thinking about getting inked as part of your own adventure, here are 5 things to keep in mind:

1. Choose a Design with Real Meaning

Sure, that tiny airplane or “wanderlust” script might look cute on Pinterest, but will it still feel meaningful in 10 years? When choosing a tattoo, focus on symbols, quotes, or imagery that genuinely resonate with you.

Ask yourself: What experience am I honoring? What feeling do I want to carry with me?
For me, it wasn’t about having a travel-themed tattoo – it was about embedding moments of transformation and connection in a visible, physical way.

2. Pick Your Artist Like You’d Pick a Travel Buddy

Just like you wouldn’t go on a month-long trek with someone who gives you bad vibes, don’t get tattooed by someone you don’t feel 100% comfortable with.

Research tattoo studios thoroughly. Scroll through portfolios, look for healed work (not just fresh photos!), and read reviews. If you're abroad, check if the studio follows hygiene standards and has a solid reputation.

Bonus tip: Great artists are often booked weeks in advance, so plan accordingly – especially if you’re travelling.

3. Think About Placement and Size

Location matters – both in terms of your body and your lifestyle. Do you want something that’s easy to show off, or something more private? Will your job, family, or future plans affect how you feel about the tattoo’s visibility?

My colleague has just asked me after 2 years of working together, if I have always had that tattoo, as he saw it for the first time. Yes, although it runs all along my spine, it's that easy to hide when I need to.

Also, certain areas hurt more than others (hello, ribs and spine!). And depending on your design, some body parts simply work better than others.

4. Plan for Forever (Even If Life Changes)

I know, I know – tattoos are “forever”… but also, life happens. Tastes change. Relationships end. Bodies change.

If you're unsure about committing to something long-term, maybe opt for a minimalist design first. And hey – if one day your tattoo no longer feels like you, it’s not the end of the world. Thanks to services like Denver laser tattoo removal, there are options to reverse or update old ink. It’s always better to make an intentional decision, but it’s nice to know you’re not stuck with your 2009 “YOLO” tattoo forever.

5. Respect the Aftercare

Aftercare is not optional – it’s crucial if you want your tattoo to heal well and look great for years.

Follow your artist’s instructions to the letter: wash it gently, avoid sun and pools, and don’t pick at the scabs (yes, it's tempting, but don’t). Traveling with a fresh tattoo? Plan in some down time – you’ll need to avoid sweating, sun exposure, and ocean swims for at least a couple of weeks.

Ink That Tells Your Story

Tattoos aren’t just ink—they’re stories, milestones, memories etched into skin. Whether you’re commemorating a life-changing journey, a personal transformation, or just want something beautiful to carry with you, your tattoo deserves thought, care, and meaning.

By taking the time to plan your design, choose the right artist, and think long-term, you're not just getting a tattoo—you’re creating art that reflects you.

In the end, whether it’s a tribute to a mountain climbed or a year spent chasing sunsets, your skin becomes the canvas of your story. Wear it with pride.
