Barely crawling pub crawl in Barcelona

As we are both beer lovers and tasting local beers is one of our missions on this trip (categories Is good / Isn't good), we couldn't resist and devoted the first night in Barcelona to exploring local beers and bar scene.

Schnitzel, power nap and a bit of sightseeing

To get to Venice airport, we got up before 6.00 and got to the hostel in Barca shortly after 17:00. Logically, after arrival to the hostel, we went straight for a power nap to handle the party night we have planned. Aaand, as proper Slavic tourists, we had some schnitzel from Primoz's mum. So a bit of sleep and bite of mum’s schnitzels and we were ready to explore Barcelona’s nightlife. As our hostel was only 1km from Sagrada familia, we couldn't miss the illuminated view of it, so first steps were towards the most famous Barcelonian sight – and it really is spectacular. This huge monstrosity is much bigger in person than in the pictures.

Friday night in Barcelona? Awesome, if you find the pubs.

Afer this bit of sightseeing, the pub crawl could be started. The first task – find a pub. As it turned out, not so easy in our neighborhood. We were walking 30 min and only saw kebap and falafel places. Sure, we could have some beers there, but it didn't have the proper Spanish atmosphere. After another 5 min walking and almost dying from thirst, we gave up and sat down in a Chinese bistro, where we have finally ordered a beer. Very cold Estrella Galicia came to our table and accompanied by the smell of piss and screaming children it tasted even worse than it does otherwise.

Two most alternative places in Barca

Not giving up on Barca yet, we continued towards the center, soon making it to the Arc of Triumph and getting another bit of evening sightseeing. After another 10 min of walk, we finally find ourselves in the heart of the city, hoping to get a bit more taste of its nightlife. Soon enough, we find a shady looking pub – just the way we like it.

Cal Brut, Probably the dirtiest bar in the world“ proudly announces the bar name. Small enough to handle max 30 people, all of them probably Catalonian political activist, this place looks like a miniature version of Bizzarnica bar in Metelkova in our beloved Ljubljana. Wall covered with stickers, signatures of visitors and pictures of rock legend and political leaders. From the ceiling are hanging surfboards and behind the bar are two boys handling drinks and food at the same time. Yes, this bar also has opened kitchen, if we can call it that. „Dos cervezas por favor“ and we are getting another portion of Estrella – OK, looks like this is what true people of Barcelona drink and so are we...  With its special vibe, this bar makes it fast to the top of our list.

Continuing exploring the narrow illuminated streets which are slowly getting full of locals as well as tourist, we continue to discover another jewel – the Cat Bar. Owned by an American, looks like this is the gathering point for expats and foreigners. We are welcomed by a piano player, several flags (including the Czech one) and a wide offer of crafted beers. They even have a vegan beer and vegan burger! Yes, definitely sticking around here for a bit. Before we leave I ask the owner what time they open the next day, marking it on the map for a Saturday's lunch.

Eventually, we decide to call the last round of beers and leave the rest of the exploring to the daylight, after all, the whole Barcelona is waiting for us, and we only have one day. Yes, I know, whatever excuse I use here – truth is we simply were too tired to party on :-D
