If you do thes emistakes, you may find that you don’t end up getting as much out of your travel experience and that you also end up not being able to have the vacation of your dreams.
Understanding the Terrain
One of the first things you need to do is take the time to understand Idaho’s terrain. The trails are very diverse, and this is great. They are also incredibly breathtaking. With that said, you do need to make sure that you do not overlook the dangers associated with them and that you also make sure that you take note of the ratings for the trails. Some trails may be listed as being moderate difficulty, or even extreme, but that doesn’t mean that this is the same as the trails that you are used to back home. If you want to help yourself here, then you need to look up the trails on AllTrails or something similar. This will allow you to see the trail conditions and how much uphill distance there is. You can then assess whether or not you feel as though it is a good option for you. As a general rule, you need to start small and then work your way up. If you can do this, then you will soon be able to get the result you need.
Not Checking the Weather
Idaho’s weather can change in an instant. This is especially the case if you are going to the Sawtooths. Clear skies can give way to things like thunderstorms in no time at all, and if the temperature drops, then this can present even more issues. If you want to help yourself here, then it’s a good idea for you to check out the different weather sources before you go and make sure that you are prepared for everything. If you can do this, then you will find it easier to not only have the best time, but also make sure that you are able to get the result you want. If you can, you should always take some insulating layers with you, and you should also make sure that you are packing a waterproof shell. If you can do this, then you will soon find that it is easier for you to have the best time without being limited by the weather too much.
Ignoring Wildlife
If you intend to go hiking in North Idaho, then you need to make sure that you take note of the wildlife. You will soon find that there is a lot of wildlife that lives here, from black bears to mountain lions and even wolves. You may also find that there are a lot of rattlesnakes, too, something you do need to be aware of. If you want to help yourself here, then you need to make sure that you are taking note of the fact that encounters are rare, but they do happen. You need to take note of how you are going to respond to them and that you are not compromising yourself by not being prepared. As a general rule, you need to carry some bear spray with you, and you also need to make sure that you learn how to use it. Also, pack your bag so you can prepare for such encounters, as this is a good way for you to avoid disasters later down the line.
Not Packing the Right Shoes
It’s so important that you pack the right shoes. Blisters are not fun, and sore knees often happen if you do not take the right footwear with you. Try and make sure that you are aware of any steep or muddy terrain, and also take note of how sneakers simply aren’t going to cut it. You should also try and wear sturdy hiking boots, and that you also take some trail shoes with you. Shoes like these often have a good grip, and they are also the best way for you to prepare for a good hike. Gaiters are good if you want to try and keep debris out of your boots, and they also help you to navigate snowy areas, so be mindful of that.
Forgetting about the Sun
You cannot forget about sunscreen when you are out and hiking in Idaho. At higher elevations, you may find that you end up being exposed to way more UV rays and that you are also going to have little to no shade. One way for you to navigate this would be for you to take some high SPF sunscreen with you and to also make sure that you check your ears and the back of your neck on a regular basis. If you don’t, then you may find that this ends up making a huge difference to you and your enjoyment. You should also try and take some sunglasses with you, as well as a wide-brimmed hat. This can make a huge difference to you, and it can also help you to have the best time when you are out and about. Of course, if you are expecting to go up against hot temperatures, then hydration should also be a priority. Dehydration is a big issue, and it is also the most common cause of nausea, fatigue, and even poor performance. One way for you to stop this would be you to try and take a flask of water with you. As well as this, you also need to try and take note of where the water points are, so you can make sure that you are not ignoring them and going without water, when again, you just don’t need to. If you plan to refill from natural sources, then this is great, but at least make sure you have a filter or purifier with you.
